The body of Congress Youth leader Himani Narwal was found stuffed inside a suitcase near the Sampla Bus Stand on the Rohtak-Delhi highway on Saturday. The discovery came on the day Haryana was conducting municipal elections, raising concerns over law and order. Narwal, 22, was a district vice president of the Youth Congress in Rohtak and had been active in several political campaigns, including the Bharat Jodo Yatra, where she was seen alongside Rahul Gandhi.
The suitcase containing Narwal’s body was spotted by a passerby, who alerted the police. She was dressed in a white top and red pants, with a black shawl wrapped around her neck. Police sent the body for postmortem and launched an investigation. Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Batra, who identified her, urged Rohtak’s Superintendent of Police to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT). “This is extremely sad and shocking. An SIT should be formed, and strict action should be taken against the accused,” Batra stated.
Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda also reacted strongly, calling the murder “barbaric” and demanding a high-level, impartial probe. “The murder in this manner and finding her body in a suitcase is extremely sad and shocking. This is a blot on the law and order of the state,” Hooda said. Narwal had been actively involved in the Congress party, participating in campaigns with Hooda and his son, MP Deepender Hooda. She was also known for her association with Haryanvi folk artistes at Congress rallies.
Narwal’s last social media post was about attending a wedding, just a day before she was found dead. Reports indicate that her family has faced past tragedies—her father allegedly died by suicide, and her brother was reportedly murdered. The circumstances surrounding her murder remain unclear, and the police are examining all angles, including personal and political motives.
The incident has sparked outrage within the Congress party, with leaders questioning the state’s law and order. The police have assured a thorough investigation, but no arrests have been made so far. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area, and forensic teams are assisting in the probe.
